Most national brands plan one big Diwali campaign and call it a year. In South India, that leaves enormous opportunity on the table. Pongal, Ugadi, Vishu, Onam, Navaratri and Karthigai Deepam each carry deep meaning — and audiences reward brands that show up for their festival, in their language.
January — Pongal & Sankranti
Tamil Nadu's harvest festival, celebrated alongside Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Think gratitude, family, new beginnings and agriculture. Strong for food, home, apparel, jewellery, automobiles and real estate.
March / April — Ugadi, Tamil New Year & Vishu
New-year festivals across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. A natural moment for fresh starts: financial products, education, home purchases and gold.
August / September — Onam
Kerala's biggest celebration and retail season. Ten days of shopping, food and family, with a large Gulf NRI audience celebrating from abroad. Plan separately from your national calendar — Onam deserves its own creative, language and timing.
September / October — Navaratri, Golu & Ayudha Pooja
Nine nights of celebration with distinct regional traditions — Golu displays in Tamil Nadu, Dasara in Mysuru, Bathukamma in Telangana. Great for gifting, fashion, décor and vehicles.
October / November — Deepavali
The most competitive window of the year. Start early, lock in ad budgets ahead of the rush and give your creative a regional flavour so it doesn't blend into national noise.
December — Karthigai Deepam & year-end
Festival of lamps in Tamil Nadu, followed by Christmas and New Year — especially important in Kerala and urban centres.
How to plan a festival campaign
- Start six to eight weeks before the festival
- Create in the regional language — not translated from English
- Match the cultural tone: devotion, family, harvest or celebration
- Update your Google Business Profile hours and post offers
- Retarget festival visitors for the weeks after
Showing up thoughtfully for regional festivals is one of the most cost-effective ways to build affection for your brand in South India.
